Ask yourself these 2 questions:

  • Why do people write?
  • What makes good reading?

Writing is a shared experience and integrally linked to reading... and yet, students are usually asked to write alone, without purpose and for little or no audience.  Why is that?

Writing is intrinsically linked to reading. All writing is read - either by the individual or others. Audience is everything. Guiding students to online publishing gives them a real audience.

The Writing Process - have we thought about deconstructing that process and making it less linear. Why don't we allow students to fast prototype their writing when they want to? Check out this diagram as food for thought...

Finally, a word on Drop Everything and Write. Nothing has made our students love to write more than DEW. Nothing. Allow your students 20 minutes a couple of times a week to simply write with no rules. It's beautiful.
